Fuji Xerox's annual Sustainability Report proves that actions speak louder than words

A host of targets are met or exceeded during 2010/2011, proving the effectiveness of the company's pioneering sustainability policies

Hong Kong, 8th December 2011 – Fuji Xerox has published its second sustainability report. The report, which not only reports progress against environmental objectives but also corporate citizenship and economic targets, documents healthy progress since the company's inaugural sustainability report – the first in Hong Kong's IT sector – in 2009/2010. Like last year, the findings were verified by an independent third party. This year, the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) was commissioned to audit the report and confirm the information contained had once again met the requirements for a 'B+ application level' – a highly respectable rating that reflects the HKQAA's conclusion that the report's data is accurate and clear.

Environmental performance

Fuji Xerox's innovative International Resource Recycling System enabled the company to make significant progress in its flagship 'zero-landfill' policy, which sees end-of-life products and consumables disassembled at the company's international network of recycling facilities and recycled into the industrial process. The proportion of used products and consumables that were diverted from landfill hit an all-time record of 99.9%, up 0.1% from the 99.8% achieved the previous year.
Another key focus for Fuji Xerox Hong Kong is reducing carbon emissions. Although the company generates a small amount of CO2 when measured against its competitors or current international standards, the Fuji Xerox group has set the ambitious target of achieving a 30% reduction in total carbon emissions from 2005 levels by 2020. Over 2010/2011, Fuji Xerox Hong Kong continued to contribute to that goal, reducing its carbon emissions from energy consumption by 8% despite increased business. This is a significant achievement, exceeding the company's goal of a 1% reduction per year.

Corporate citizenship

Fuji Xerox achieved a number of corporate social responsibility (CSR) milestones over the past year. Having achieved huge success with its "Eco-school Story Writing" and "Photo-taking for Biodiversity” initiatives in 2008 and 2009 respectively, the company launched a "Shooting Green" video competition in late 2010, aimed at raising youngsters' awareness of environmental issues and promoting low-carbon lifestyles.

For the first time, this initiative was subjected to a 'social impact assessment' – an emerging tool adopted by Fuji Xerox to assess how successfully the programme met its objectives. Following the competition, 101 of the participants were interviewed to find out how much it had contributed to their understanding of environmental issues. Interviewees were asked to rate seven programme attributes (environment, skill development, developing potential, self-enhancement, business impact, partnership and financial leverage) between 0 and 3 based on the level of impact they felt each aspect of the programme had on them. Feedback proved to be overwhelmingly positive, and Fuji Xerox plans to continue using social impact assessments for future CSR initiatives.

As well as events in the wider community, Fuji Xerox has enjoyed success in a number of its internal CSR initiatives. Earlier this year, Fuji Xerox saw the creation of Hong Kong's Family-Friendly Employers Award Scheme by the Family Council, an advisory body that promotes the government's objective of building social harmony and alleviating social problems by championing family values and creating a pro-family culture. The judging panel evaluates organizations and decides on the winners using the following criteria:

  • Is the workplace family-friendly?
  • Does the employer enable employees to make adequate family care arrangements?
  • Does the employer provide appropriate care, benefits and support to employees and their families?
  • Does the employer have policies and practices that promote family values outside the workplace?

Fuji Xerox Hong Kong won the Distinguished Family-Friendly Employer Award through its dedicated focus on its "Good Company Concept" – a vision for growth that involves balancing being Strong, Kind and Interesting. Being strong involves delivering excellent products and services; being kind involves contributing to the local and global community; and being interesting involves creating work environments where employees genuinely feel "home".

By focusing on this third pillar of creating "home", Fuji Xerox Hong Kong has established award-winning policies and practices that allow its employees to balance and integrate their family and work lives. By making the workplace into a "second home" for its staff, the company has fostered a work environment that boosts morale and loyalty, cherishes the values of "love and care", encourages "respect and responsibility" and promotes "communication and harmony" among its employees. Of the 1,100 nominations submitted to the Scheme, Fuji Xerox was among just 41 companies with 100 or more employees to win recognition.

"I'm delighted with the progress we've made since our inaugural Sustainability Report," said Joseph Yu, Managing Director, Fuji Xerox Hong Kong. "Whether we're talking about within Fuji Xerox Hong Kong, or external community initiatives, or sustainability activities at the group level, we've racked up some real achievements in which all Fuji Xerox employees can take pride. In many cases, these also won recognition from outside organisations, and I am grateful to the many stakeholders who have given us valuable support and feedback during the past 12 months. Going forward, we're determined to continue in our efforts to make our company and our operations even more sustainable."
